– Rep. Rosemary M. Brown (R- Monroe/Pike) hosted a policy discussion Thursday at Middle Smithfield Community and Cultural Center in East Stroudsburg to discuss initiatives to address the persistent concerns of illegal garbage dumping and litter issues in our community.
Spurred by the strong environmental concerns caused by this issue, as well as the impacts to beautification and tourism, local leaders discussed, with public input, public policy initiatives to mitigate and address these issues.
“We are truly grateful for the amazing local efforts already in place to collect litter and keep our roads clean,” said Brown. “The purpose of this policy discussion is to identify the root cause, and address it there. We need to bolster our preventative and proactive efforts and ease the burden on the reactive measures.”
The following people who spoke at the event included, Rep. Brown; Annette Atkinson, Monroe County Planning Commission chair and Middle Smithfield Township supervisor; Jim Lambert, Monroe County Waste Authority executive director; Chris Barrett, Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau CEO; Mike Dwyer, COG president and township supervisor; Sharon Laverdure, Monroe County commissioner.
