District of Character
The “District of Character” is an initiative I created to enhance character development and promote daily reminders for residents of the 189th District about how we can create a stronger community without policy changes. No one is perfect, but we can always work to improve our character daily. Click here to learn more.
May’s word of the month is “patience."
“The ability to endure a trying situation without complaint, loss of temper or becoming irritated.”

Deer ticks have been found in each of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, and Pennsylvania leads the nation in confirmed cases of Lyme disease. Deer ticks are the primary carriers of Lyme disease, which is a zoonotic disease – or transmissible between animals and humans. Here are a few tips from the Department of Agriculture for you to protect yourself and your family, including your pets.

Celebrating Pike County’s AAA Volunteers

On Friday May 5, I attended the annual Pike County Area Agency on Aging Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. This year was the 33rd year for the event to celebrate individuals who selflessly volunteer their time, talents, and spirits toward helping seniors in our community. Thank you to all the volunteers who attended! Pictured with me above are Andrew Baker from Sen. Baker’s office; Robin LoDolce, Pike AAA Director; Secretary of Aging Teresa Osborne, and Gina Ehrhardt from Rep. Mike Peifer’s office.

Investing in and Celebrating Local Small Business
On Thursday May 4, I attended the ribbon-cutting of Mountain View Vineyards new winery in Hamilton Township that will also include the Frogtown Bistro, featuring small plates from a tapas style menu. The occasion marked the dream of Randy and Linda Rice finally coming to fruition after many years of hard, dedicated work. Pictures above are Rep. Madden, Randy and Linda Rice, and Sen. Scavello. Congratulations on achieving your dream and opening up your new facility. Cheers!

Celebrating Small Business Week
Pictured are: Tyler Day from Rep. Jack Rader’s office; Sen. Mario Scavello, Deputy Secretary Lepore; Charles Leonard, Executive Director PMEDC; John Christy, Monroe County Commissioner; Amy Leiser, Executive Director Monroe County Historical Association; and Brian Fenstermaker from my district office.
On May 3, Department of Community and Economic Development Deputy Secretary for Marketing, Tourism and Film Carrie Lepore, visited the Penn-Stroud Hotel project, located at 700 Main Street in Stroudsburg. This event was part of the department’s celebration of Small Business Week, which ran from April 30 to May 6. We are thrilled that the department has chosen the Penn-Stroud Hotel as one of their featured projects that has received funding assistance from the Commonwealth.

Go Fishing with the Family!

To help share the love of fishing with families, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) has scheduled several opportunities in May and June for families to learn fishing skills.

The six events – three in May and three in June – will lead up to the two statewide Fish-for-Free Days – the Sunday before Memorial Day, May 28, and Independence Day, July 4. Each of the state’s six regions will host an event. For the list, click here.

The program is open to all ages, including children ages 5 and older, and the PFBC provides equipment, bait and tackle. PFBC staff will be present to teach skills and assist those who fish. Preregistration is required. Space is limited, and there will be no registrations accepted the day of the events.

Free Dental Care for Veterans
Thousands of veterans will receive free dental care on Saturday, June 24, when doctors and their teams from nearly 450 Aspen Dental-branded practices in 35 states open their doors for Aspen Dental’s National Day of Service – an event that is expected to be the largest single-day oral health initiative for veterans in 2016.

Like millions of other Americans, veterans can struggle to find oral health care when they need it. That’s why Aspen Dental’s Healthy Mouth Movement, a community-giving initiative launched in 2014, is focusing its efforts on helping veterans get the dental care they need.

Interested veterans should call 1-844-AspenHMM (1-844-277-3646) to find a participating practice in their community and schedule an appointment in advance – space is limited and appointments are filling up fast! Aspen Dental in Stroudsburg will be accepting local appointments.

Are You Hiring or Looking for Work?
My office often receives word from companies in the area who are looking for new employees, and we also hear from those who are looking for work. If you have an opening, or are looking for a job, call my office at 570-420-8301, and ask to talk with Joshua. He keeps a list and will periodically send out emails to people when we learn about an opening in the area.

Check Out PA’s ‘Happy Traveler’ Guide
The Pennsylvania Tourism Office has released its annual “Happy Traveler” vacation guide to help residents and visitors plan a perfect summer vacation or weekend getaway. The guide features information about the 150th anniversary of Frank Lloyd Wright’s birth and encourages travelers to visit one of his iconic properties in Pennsylvania — Fallingwater, Duncan House and Kentuck Knob.

Additionally, the guide features 11 new “Happy Day Road Trips,” one in each of the state’s distinct tourism regions, providing visitors a one-stop shop for even more of Pennsylvania’s best unique stops and only-in-PA attractions. The travel guide is available digitally, or free printed copies can be requested at

Tourism in Pennsylvania attracts more than 192 million domestic travelers, injecting more than $40 billion in the state’s economy annually, and the industry as a whole supports more than 482,524 Pennsylvania jobs and generates $4 billion in state and local tax revenue.
