District of Character
The “District of Character” is an initiative I created to enhance character development and promote daily reminders for residents of the 189th District about how we can create a stronger community without policy changes. No one is perfect, but we can always work to improve our character daily.
April word of the month is “Values.”

“Considering someone or something to be important or beneficial; have a high opinion of, to cherish, to treasure.”

Help for Lyme Disease Treatment

Pennsylvania has consistently ranked among the highest in the country in confirmed cases of Lyme disease.

To help those affected by this disease and other related tick-borne illnesses, the House Health Committee approved legislation that would require health insurers to cover treatment plans for Lyme disease or related tick-borne illnesses as prescribed by a patient’s health care practitioner, regardless if the treatment plan includes short-term or long-term antibiotic treatment.

Lyme disease can be easily treated with antibiotics when caught and treated early. If untreated, the disease can cause joint swelling, cardiac or neurologic complications. The most severe cases can be debilitating.

House Bill 629 now moves to the full House for consideration.

PA’s First Ever Tick-Borne Diseases Wellness Center Opening at Wayne Memorial Hospital

Pennsylvania's first ever Tick-Borne Diseases Wellness Center, at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, PA, will be open beginning on Wednesday, April 10!
The center will be staffed by a Lyme and related tick-borne disease-literate nurse practitioner. As time moves on, more specialized staff will be added at the center.
As many of you know I have been leading the charge with efforts to build our state’s efforts with Lyme Disease and tick-borne illnesses in Harrisburg with both legislation and education.

I have also championed a grant that was awarded to East Stroudsburg University to allow all Pennsylvanians to have ticks tested for free to do our best to prevent illness. Testing the tick can let you know if you have a chance of being infected.
We have an extremely high amount of individuals who are suffering with some of these disease s and while I can’t endorse any medical service, I wanted to ensure the community knows of this new local effort.

Good Money Habits Training Resource for Kids

To help high school and college students make smart money decisions, Pennsylvania is launching a new program called the “FinLit Forum.”

The conference-style program involves multiple state and nonprofit agencies that provide high school and college students with critical financial knowledge to be successful in the next stages of their lives.

The program addresses many “real life” financial issues of young people, including banking basics, introduction to budgeting, understanding credit reports and scores, scams and identity theft, insurance 101, and financial aid.

Married 50 Years or Longer? You Can Register for Our Anniversary Tea Celebration

I am inviting all local couples celebrating 50 or more years of marriage to my Anniversary Tea on Friday, May 17, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Shawnee Fire Company #1, 102 Firehouse Lane, Shawnee-on-Delaware.

The purpose of this anniversary tea is to commemorate all our local couples whose love and devotion continues to stand the test of time. Marriage is more than signing a piece of paper – it is about commitment, compromise and, most importantly, trusting one another. These couples have achieved an amazing milestone – one that I believe should be honored.

During this event, the Monroe County Area Agency on Aging will provide a senior services briefing. I will also be providing a legislative update. Each couple will receive an anniversary pastry made by the Stroudsmoor Inn Towne Bakery and Café.

Residents who will be celebrating 50 years or more as a couple and are interested in attending this event can register through my district office at 570-420-8301 by Monday, May 6.
