Brown Supports Resolution Recognizing May as Lupus Awareness Month
HARRISBURG – Last week, Rep. Rosemary Brown (R-Monroe/Pike) joined her House colleagues in unanimously passing a resolution recognizing May 2014 as “Lupus Awareness Month,” and May 10, 2014, as “World Lupus Day” in Pennsylvania, as a way to generate attention and awareness for the disease.

“Lupus is a serious, sometimes fatal, autoimmune disease that can cause debilitating consequences for those who contract it,” said Brown. “With a high number of Pennsylvanians affected by this disease, it’s important to remain committed to finding a cure, and supporting those who are affected.”

House Resolution 708 explains that lupus is an autoimmune disease where the immune system effectively loses its way, and instead of warding off foreign invaders, like viruses and bacteria, the immune system attacks healthy cells, causing inflammation and pain leading to permanent damage. Further, it is estimated that 65,000 Pennsylvanians, along with 1.5 million Americans and 5 million people worldwide, are affected.

Lupus can affect almost anyone, although 90 percent of people with lupus are females between the ages of 15 and 45, with the majority of new cases seen in women who are in their late teens and early 20s. Additionally, the causes are unknown and there are no permanent cures.

Monroe County has a lupus support group that meets on the first Tuesday of the month, from 6-8 p.m., at the Pocono Medical Center, located at 206 East Brown St., on the first floor in the Brodhead Conference Room, in East Stroudsburg. Those interested in learning more about this group should contact Jill Gleeson-Doherty by calling 570-369-9337. The group also has a Facebook page,
