Peifer, Brown to Host Senior Citizens Expo Sept. 6
HARRISBURG – Reps. Mike Peifer (R-Monroe/Pike/Wayne) and Rosemary M. Brown (R-Monroe/Pike) invite area senior citizens and their families to a Senior Citizens Expo on Thursday, Sept. 6.
The expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dingman Township Fire Hall, 680 Log Tavern Road, Milford (off Route 739).
“The expo offers a great opportunity for senior citizens, their family members and their caregivers to gather helpful information in one convenient place,” Peifer said. “There are many programs and services available to help senior citizens maintain their quality of life, and the expo is a great way to learn about them.”
Brown added, “We have several vendors who will offer health screenings, such as blood pressure, hearing tests, pre-diabetes testing, memory testing and more. I hope people will join us and take advantage of these great services.”
More than 60 exhibitors will take part in this year’s expo, including the Pike County Area Agency on Aging, Pike County Transportation, Safehaven, Pike County Bar Association and Pike County Veterans Affairs. Representatives from nursing care, personal care, physical therapy, senior living, medical equipment and supplies, hospice and insurance service providers also will be on hand.
The Pike County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a drug take-back event at the expo. Controlled, non-controlled and over-the-counter medications will be collected. Needles, syringes, creams and liquids will not be accepted. Participants should remove any personal information from bottles or packages that contain pills or capsules. The program is anonymous.
For added convenience, senior citizens may use Pike County Transportation services to travel to and from the expo. Anyone planning to use the service must be registered with the agency in advance of the expo. Please call 570-296-3408 or 1-866-681-4947 for an application or visit www.pikepa.org for a downloadable application and brochure (click on “offices” at the top of the web page and then “transportation” in the drop-down menu). Registered users must then reserve their space for travel to the expo no later than Aug. 27. Senior citizens who have not used Pike County Transportation services before should allow a week for processing of their application.
Several elected officials, or their representatives, will attend, including the offices of U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, Congressman Thomas Marino, state Sen. Lisa Baker and Pike Commissioners Rich Caridi, Karl Wagner and Matt Osterberg. Also scheduled to attend is Harry Forbes of the Northeast Regional Office of Gov. Tom Corbett.
CVS will provide flu shots at a nominal fee.
Information about the state’s new voter ID law also will be provided.
Three speakers will address expo attendees:
• Dave Shallcross of the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General will offer tips to
protect against consumer fraud, such as home improvement scams and identity
• Pike County District Attorney Ray Tonkin will talk about local issues affecting
senior citizens in the county.
• Pike County Sheriff Philip Bueki will discuss the county’s drug take-back initiative.
Light refreshments will be available, and admission is free.
