Brown, Boback and Brown Head ‘Women Taking the Lead’ Panel in Harrisburg
3/27/2012
HARRISBURG – Reps. Rosemary Brown (R-Monroe/Pike), Karen Boback (R-Columbia/Luzerne/Wyoming) and Vanessa Lowery Brown (D-Philadelphia) participated in a panel discussion organized by the Pennsylvania Commission for Women on Monday to showcase women in leadership for Pennsylvania’s girls and young women.

“It is important for young girls to have mentors to look up to,” said Boback. “This panel is about showing Pennsylvania’s girls that women can attain positions of leadership and influence. I encourage young women to get involved in their communities, become engaged in government and politics, and take the lead.”

The panel, held in the state Capitol, included six women in positions of private sector and government leadership. The panel was comprised of Boback; Brown; Brown; Dr. Pamela Hadley, physician and entrepreneur; Amy Hancock, president of Advantage Group; and Pamela Varkony, international writer and speaker.

Maria Montero, executive director of the Pennsylvania Commission for Women and the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs, organized the event and invited high school students from the Harrisburg area to engage in a question-and-answer session with the panelists.

“Although women have made major strides in both government and business, the numbers of women in leadership positions can still improve and opportunities are there for the taking,” Rosemary Brown said. “Having experience in both the public and private sectors, I can see firsthand the tremendous value that women can contribute to any organization. It is my hope to see some of the young women we spoke to filling these roles in the future.”

Among many topics, the panelists talked about their own influences that encouraged them in their own endeavors. From community involvement and challenges to parental encouragement and the struggle of women worldwide, the panelists spoke about their own success, their mentors and the ways in which young women can find their own paths.

The event was held in conjunction with Women’s History Month. Boback and Vanessa Brown became involved after they collaborated to found The Ladies of the House Caucus, which was established to join female members together in the interest of women’s issues in an effort to promote the equality and advancement of women in the Commonwealth.
